Proof-of-concept build is out!

welcome to whiteslate.

So! The first build of the game is officially out. This isn't an April Fools prank, or anything-- the timing was just funny to me, is all.

I'm still within the stages of figuring things out, trying to get an idea for what directions I want the story to take, but honestly the fact I've made it this far feels like a miracle.

For those not in the know; my internet was down for three days this past Sunday. I didn't have anything to do, and didn't want to work on my other major projects-- I wanted to do something light with minimal effort.  I saw I had Ren'py downloaded, and that the official documentation was included as part of the install. So, I figured I might as well screw around and see what I could make.

I pulled one of the ideas I have on backburner so I don't spread myself too thin (though I'm still often doing that anyway), namely "What if all of my half-remembered D&D characters lived in a purgatory together, and had to make do?" I thought it'd be neat to immortalize all of my characters, so that they'd exist beyond me, living on outside of my memories. That's the beauty of the internet, I find.

And so, after 6 days of 10-12 hour work, I've gotten a working prototype. Granted, it doesn't get to the end of the prologue, it's missing music and the sound effects aren't great. But, it's something! I'll certainly be working on this more in the coming days (especially with how some of you have actually spent money to support the project-- thank you for that!!), but for now I think I need a break. Like, a day or two of rest.

...Will I actually follow through with this break? Who knows.

known issues

  • Naming your character is impossible on gamepad. You can still advance the game, but you're stuck with the default character name if you don't have a keyboard.
  • Pronoun selection isn't implemented yet. Script is currently written around the option to cover for this.
  • Sound effects are low quality, aren't always fitting, and some are louder/quieter than they should be. There's also no music. It's an unfortunate side effect of the time crunch I was on to be able to premiere this on April Fools Day.
